Go in, cross to the mosque, then walk out to one western bastion for the sea before you leave. Skipping the bastion to save five minutes is the one shortcut I would not take. If your whole stop in Rethymno is 75 minutes off a coach, do not climb at all — spend it in the old town instead, using the old town walk.
